About Unaided Awareness: “What upcoming movies are you aware of?” Each week, we ask thousands of people this simple, open-ended question. The results are what we call unaided awareness. It’s unaided because we don’t provide a list of films, artwork, or descriptions. The respondents have to know about the film on their own. Unaided awareness is highly correlated to box office performance. The thinking goes that if someone can name a film off the top of their head, chances are they want to see it. Because it is unaided, the numbers tend to be small but mighty.
The Weekly Unaided Awareness Chart includes any film more than six weeks from release, registering at least 1% unaided awareness (UA). Early signs of UA more than six weeks out often translate to box office success upon release. Can Lionsgate successfully expand the John Wick universe? The answer has been unclear, with BALLERINA struggling to make its mark on The Quorum. General awareness for the film sits at 25%, which is lower than THE BAD GUYS 2, which opens two months after BALLERINA. Interest is also languishing at 39%, ranking 22nd among the 47 films currently being tracked by The Quorum.
Things might be turning around for the film. A new trailer was released two weeks ago, and the film was featured this week at CinemaCon. It feels like the campaign is beginning to rev up. This week, BALLERINA makes its debut on the Weekly Uniaded Awareness Chart at 1%. We would have preferred to see it make an appearance earlier than nine weeks before release, but better late than never.
While BALLERINA has been trending up, ELIO can’t seem to maintain momentum. It first appeared on the Bubbling Under chart last week but fell off this week. We’re still waiting for this one to hit its stride.
Elsewhere, A MINECRAFT MOVIE had one of the most explosive final weeks we’ve seen at The Quorum. Unaided more than doubled from 7% to 15%. Total awareness jumped nine points, interest climbed six, and interest among younger men soared nine. WARFARE crossed the 1% mark for the first time.
