About Unaided Awareness: “What upcoming movies are you aware of?” Each week, we ask thousands of people this simple, open-ended question. The results are what we call unaided awareness. It’s unaided because we don’t provide a list of films, artwork, or descriptions. The respondents have to know about the film on their own. Unaided awareness is highly correlated to box office performance. The thinking goes that if someone can name a film off the top of their head, chances are they want to see it. Because it is unaided, the numbers tend to be small but mighty.
The Weekly Unaided Awareness Chart includes any film more than six weeks from release, registering at least 1% unaided awareness (UA). Early signs of UA more than six weeks out often translate to box office success upon release. On the heels of CinemaCon, there were several new trailer drops this week, including THE NAKED GUN, a full spot for M3GAN 2.0, and a “sneak peak” at SUPERMAN. All three saw a bounce, though some were bigger than others.
M3GAN reached 2%, matching the pop it got off The Grammy’s in February, and SUPERMAN has been slowly rising over the past six weeks, reaching 5% for the first time since late January. While the launch of THE NAKE GUN campaign generated a noticeable uptick in unaided, it wasn’t enough to reach the Bubbling Under chart.
As we say goodbye to LILO & STITCH and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE—THE FINAL RECKONING, we welcome KARATE KID: LEGENDS to the main chart for the first time—just in time, too. Next week, it graduates off the chart.
Next week, keep an eye out for TRON: ARES.
Elsewhere, THUNDERBOLTS* is the top film this week, rising from 4% to 7%. THE AMATEUR and DROP arrived in theaters at 3%, though the former was a hair shy of 4%. WARFARE held steady at 1%. No other films reached 1% for the first time this week.
