About Unaided Awareness: “What upcoming movies are you aware of?” Each week, we ask thousands of people this simple, open-ended question. The results are what we call unaided awareness. It’s unaided because we don’t provide a list of films, artwork, or descriptions. The respondents have to know about the film on their own. Unaided awareness is highly correlated to box office performance. The thinking goes that if someone can name a film off the top of their head, chances are they want to see it. Because it is unaided, the numbers tend to be small but mighty.
The Weekly Unaided Awareness Chart includes any film more than six weeks from release, registering at least 1% unaided awareness (UA). Early signs of UA more than six weeks out often translate to box office success upon release. For several weeks now, the Weekly Unaided Awareness Chart has featured what’s expected to be the biggest summer hits. Still, a few summer titles have yet to appear on the chart, including F1, ELIO, and BALLERINA. Unfortunately, none of these are even close to reaching 1%.
Then there’s KARATE KID: LEGENDS, which opens on May 30th. Although it didn’t register enough unaided to reach the main chart, KARATE debuted in the Bubbling Under chart. Perhaps this is a stepping stone to an extended run above 1% unaided. Next week, keep an eye out for FREAKIER FRIDAY thanks to a new trailer released this morning.
Otherwise, the other titles held steady or took a slight step backward. After reaching a high of 5% last week, THUNDERBOLTS* graduates off the chart at a still robust 4%. JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH stabilizes at 3% after slipping from 5% to 4% and 3% in the previous two weeks. And HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON runs the risk of falling off next week after dropping to 1%.
Elsewhere, SNOW WHITE scored the highest unaided again this week at 12%. The Quorum lowered its forecast for the film, not because of its unaided awareness but because interest is dropping in its core audience of younger women. This week, THE WOMAN IN YARD reached 2% unaided, its first time above 1%. NOVOCAINE arrives in theaters at 4%, while BLACK BAG reached 3%.
