If you’re a fan of Pinocchio and not going to the movies, you’re in luck. That’s because there are two high profile films about the wooden boy arriving within months of each other. A live-action version of PINOCCHIO, which is being released on Disney+ in September, is directed by Robert Zemeckis and Chris Weitz and stars Tom Hanks, Cynthia Erivo, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. A trailer for this one was released today.
Not to be confused with PINOCCHIO, Netflix also has a stop-motion animated film called PINOCCHIO earmarked for a December release. This one also has an impressive pedigree with Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson co-directing and the voices of Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, and Finn Wolfhard, among others. We got a teaser for this one back in January.
Earlier this year, we pulled both films from The Quorum in the hopes that at some point, one of the streamers would blink and choose a different title. With the arrival of the Disney+ trailer, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Of course, two films with exactly the same name present a tremendous challenge to those in the film tracking space. When we go into the field and ask what people think of the upcoming PINOCCHIO films, it’s hard for respondents to know which one we’re referencing.
So, what to do? We will add both PINOCCHIO films back to The Quorum and hope for the best. But for those of you watching these numbers on The Quorum, please know that there may not be clarity among respondents about which one we’re asking about.
