Back in 2011, when the first PUSS IN BOOTS movie came out, “Puss” was a well-known character thanks to appearances in the final three SHREK films. When it came time to spin him off, there was already a built-in audience.
As a result, that 2011 film grossed $149M domestically. It was the 16th highest-grossing film of the year and the 3rd biggest animated film behind CARS 2 and KUNG FU PANDA 2. Critics liked. So did audiences. It made over half a billion dollars worldwide and was an unqualified success.
In light of that, it seems somewhat odd that it took more than a decade to get a sequel, but here we are in 2022 with PUSS IN BOOTS 2: THE LAST WISH.
With a September 23rd release date, the film is nearly within six months of release. That is when most new movies are added to The Quorum. Given that Dreamworks just released a trailer, we added the film a few days early. Based on the response to our first fielding, it appears that absence has made the heart grow fonder.
BOOTS 2 debuts on The Quorum with some impressive numbers. Awareness is already at 43% and it has an Interest score of 5.4.
Among the animated/family films currently being tracked, BOOTS 2 ranks 5th. It is just behind MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU and ahead of DC LEAGUE OF SUPER PETS, which has been heavily marketed for several months now.
BOOTS fares even better on the Interest side, where it ranks 4th in its group with a score of 5.3.
Based on what we see here, BOOTS 2 is looking very healthy. It looks it may be one of the success stories of the September box office.
