The Quorum

Is Lady Gaga the new Cher?

What do Diana Ross, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, and Lady Gaga have in common?  They are four singers who were nominated for an Academy Award, then never nominated again. At least so far. On top of that, they were all nominated for roles that required singing.

On the flip side, you’ve got Cher, Barbra Streisand, and even Liza Minnelli who were nominated for an Oscar more than once.

This year, Hudson (RESPECT) and Gaga have an opportunity to join the latter group.

Variety‘s very early ranking of Best Actress contenders has Gaga in the pole position and Hudson right behind in third.

Of the two, it’s Gaga who is in the unique position of possibly getting a nomination for a non-singing role. That would make her the heir apparent to Cher who was nominated twice for SILKWOOD and MOONSTRUCK, neither of which were singing parts.

As for Gaga, of course, the role I’m referring to is in the upcoming film HOUSE OF GUCCI.

United Artists released a series of set photos and official stills earlier this year. And as you can see from the chart below, they resulted in an uptick in awareness. Since then, however, it’s been radio silent on the GUCCI front. As expected awareness has plateaued.

There’s no denying that this is a film that will attract a ton of attention if for no other reason than its incredible pedigree. Aside from Gaga, it stars a handful of Academy Award-nominated actors including Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Irons, and Jared Leto. Three of those folks have Oscars at home.

On top of that, it’s being directed by Ridley Scott, who has been nominated for Best Director three times but has yet to win.

Given the film’s incredible cast and Lady Gaga’s enormous social media empire that includes 84 million followers on Twitter and 48 million on Instagram, it is a bit surprising that awareness for GUCCI has yet to crack 20. Having said that, there is no reason to think that United Artists won’t give this a carefully curated roll-out in advance of its Thanksgiving release date.

The film is 130 days from release, which means a teaser, a poster, or…something should be right around the corner. Keep an eye on this one. It will be a fun one to watch.
