Grading Q1 Posters: Animation Rules

Back in January, we noted that this could be enormous for animation. A closer look at the poster grades for the year’s first quarter confirms the genre’s 2024 potential.

Over the first three months of the year, two of the three films earning an audience grade of A are animated films, including DESPICABLE ME 4, which scored the highest poster grade of the quarter.

But it’s not just those two. In 6th place is one of the many holiday-themed posters Sony dropped for its upcoming THE GARFIELD MOVIE.

Two of the top 10 are for films that have already arrived in theaters. Perhaps it’s not surprising that DUNE: CHAPTER 2 and GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE had the two largest of the year, both debuting above $80M.

That bodes well for BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE, TWISTERS, DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, and STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1, which has the potential to carve out a nice piece of business.

That also bodes well for THE FALL GUY, which could use a boost. Tracking for FALL has yet to catch fire. Hopefully, that will change in the next few weeks.
