The Weekly Unaided Awareness Chart includes any film more than six weeks from release, registering at least 1% unaided awareness (UA). This metric is highly correlated to opening weekend gross. Early signs of UA more than six weeks out often translate to box office success upon release.
This week, A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE accomplished two things. First, on the heels of THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1 and FURIOUSA, it showed that there is an appetite for prequels. Second, as expected, with a $53M haul, QUIET brought horror fans back to the theater, ending the long drought for the genre.
Looking at this week’s Weekly Unaided Awareness Chart, there could be more good news for Paramount. Thanks to a new trailer, Paramount may be launching another horror franchise with SMILE 2. It debuts on the chart with 1% unaided a full 16 weeks before its release. Of course, we’re used to seeing films register unaided the week after a trailer, then fall off the following week. So, we’ll be watching to see if SMILE 2 will stick around for another week.
Elsewhere, WICKED continues its on-again-off-again dance with the chart. This is an off week as it slides below 1%. DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE is tops, registering 11% unaided, which is the highest unaided we’ve ever seen for a film four weeks away from release.
