The Quorum

Welcome to ONE PIECE FILM: RED, the first anime title we’ve tracked, to The Quorum

We are thrilled to welcome ONE PIECE FILM: RED to The Quorum this week. RED, scheduled to open on November 4th, is the first anime title that we have tracked. And not a moment too soon.

Anime titles, specifically those released by Crunchyroll, have been under-the-radar hits. Last month, DRAGON BALL SUPER: SUPERHERO debuted at #1 with $21M, almost double the BEAST opening on the same day.

Earlier this year, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 was the top new release of the week, debuting to $18.0M on March 18th. It nearly quadrupled the opening for X on that same weekend. It would have taken the top spot if it weren’t for a little holdover movie called THE BATMAN.

And, in April of 2021, DEMON SLAYER THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN nearly took the top spot at the box office from MORTAL KOMBAT.

Are you starting to see a pattern here? These anime titles – all released by Crunchyroll – are opening near $20M against both soft and tough competition. There is very clearly a sizable audience for these films.

In a savvy bit of scheduling, Crunchyroll just dated RED for November 4th, where it will go up against, well, not much. There are no major studio wide releases scheduled for that weekend. With few major titles opening the week before (Halloween is always a slow weekend), RED will likely compete with the third week of BLACK ADAM for the top spot.

If you’re not paying attention to these anime titles, it’s time to take notice. We have, and so, to ONE PIECE FILM: RED, we say welcome to The Quorum.
