Will SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE be just the 4th animated film to be nominated for Best Picture?

In 2019, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE won the Academy Award for Best Animated feature, beating THE INCREDIBLES 2, ISLE OF DOGS, MIRAI, and RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation’s SPIDER-MAN™: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (PART ONE).

Based on the footage shown at CinemaCon – a mix of finished and unfinished scenes – ACROSS looks like a lock to take home the same prize at the 2024 Oscars. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it become just the 4th animated film to get a Best Picture nomination.

In introducing the film, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller acknowledged the pressure to create something even more groundbreaking than the first one, and from the looks of it, they have succeeded. The scenes shown are vibrant, exhilarating, and filled with well-earned human emotion. It looks to be a triumph.

Last week, Sony pushed the film from October of this year to June of 2023. There are some big movies scheduled to open in the summer of 2023, including GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, VOL. 3, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 as well the next FAST & FURIOUS entry and an untitled INDIANA JONES film, but it’s possible, if not likely, that ACROSS may outgross them all.

As we noted last week, ACROSS was pulled from The Quorum once it moved to June. We track Marvel films once they are within one year of release. So you’ll have to wait a few weeks before it returns to our charts. But, you may recall that when it was on The Quorum, it ranked in the top 5 on all measured metrics (see below). Expect the same once it returns to the site.
